But.. They will judge me

Starting your fitness journey can be daunting and fill you with all sorts of anxiety. I understand I still get anxious now even though I know no one is looking at me or cares what I am doing. Starting out you may have thoughts like...

“I don’t know what I’m doing I’m going to look like a freak”.

“I’m too fat and the fit people are going to judge me”.

“There are so many men in the free weights section they are going to look at me weird if I try using them”.

Let me try and put your mind at ease, 99% of people you will encounter in the gym will not judge you or even look at you, even if you are overweight or new etc. We are all there for the same reason and the fact that you’re even there means a level of respect from your fellow gym rats.

Also, ladies you go and you lift those free weights that section of the gym is NOT for men it is for everyone you just get your space, and you lift whatever weight you can comfortably and safely lift there is NO weight limit to use that section of the gym either!

Side note off topic… if you are being constantly starred at making you uncomfortable or you notice someone following you or even recording you always report them to gym staff... Safety first guys!

Ok back to the topic at hand… In my experience, the people I have found who actually judge me and my fitness journey are people who don’t workout. Those are the same people who will constantly bring up your “diet” things like “oh she won’t eat that she is on a diet” or say, “but you go to the gym” and try to belittle your progress and sacrifice as if you trying to better yourself is a bad thing. Note the reason these people do these things is that they don’t understand, try not to let it wiggle into your brain and take up space fuelling any anxiety.

Just remember that the fact that you are actually doing something that will potentially make you healthier is what matters! Even if every single person in that gym was judging you.. who cares! The only opinion that matters is your own and what other people think of you is none of your business.

So, head down, bum up, and just focus on your own journey.
