It's that time of year where it seems like everyone is getting a cold or flu..
You've probably heard that saying "sweat it out" in relation to training while sick..
While it's not completely black and white, there are certain situations & reasons it isn't ideal to participate in physical activities when sick...
First... You're contagious and in turn will likely spread it to who ever is around you.
Second... If you're feverish (you'd probably not feel like working out anyway) you can risk dehydration and make the fever worse. Also fever decreases muscle strength and impairs precision and coordination and increase the risk of injury.
Third... Using the "Below the Neck" rule, where you're experiencing nausea, body aches, diarrhea, productive cough (where there is phlegm) or chest congestion.. these are some instances where it's best to skip the workout.
If you're experiencing mild cold symptoms or some nasal congestion (Above the Neck rule) there's no need to skip working out altogether, but taking the contagious point into consideration maybe home workouts would be best at this time to prevent spread.
All of this considered, it's better to listen to your body and follow advice of health care professionals to stay healthy and safe while sick.
Don't feel guilty if you have to take time off for your body to recover. If you're sick and can't train there is nothing wrong with that, rest is best (oh and fluids H2O)
It's better to get Healthy!
